But that's not where the pain ends for Merriweather.
Early in the game he nailed Packers running back Eddie Lacy (see above). As you can see he ducks his head and leads with the crown of his helmet as he makes contact; text book hit on a defenseless player and sure to garner a fine.
I don't know if the NFL takes this into consideration, but since the hit knocked Lacy out of the game with a concussion he should get fined a little extra. It's one thing to commit the foul, but when it has that kind of affect on a player--just the thing the NFL is trying to avoid--it should cost more.
Lacy's injury opened the door for fellow rookie Jonathan Franklin to get some more work in as well as James Starks. Later in the game Merriweather led with his helmet yet again; this time in an effort to bring Starks down.
It didn't work, but it did accomplish one thing. He knocked himself silly. Yep--out of the game with a concussion.
Poetic justice perhaps? Or just ironic?
