St. Louis Cardinals Return to Familiar Territory--the NLCS

If you are not a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals it had to be kind of hard not to want the Pittsburgh Pirates to win their division series with the Cardinals. Here you have a franchise that has defined what a cellar dweller is for the last two decades--and now they are awesome.

While they gave the post season veterans a run for their money it was just not in the cards for the Pirates this season.

Young Gerrit Cole gave it a heck of an effort pitching five innings of three-hit ball, but as luck would have it one of those three hits--David Freese's two-run shot in the bottom of the second-- would be all that the Cardinals would need Wednesday night.

Freese's home run put the Cards up 2-0 en route to a 6-1 win giving the Cardinals the series win and the right to return to the NLCS for the third consecutive season.

It was a tough series; exactly the kind of thing that baseball fans hope for when it comes time  for  the playoffs, and while it did not end in favor of the Pirates Pittsburgh fans can hold their heads high. Their guys played well all season long and will definitely be back in the thick of things next season as well.

For now though it is time  to go home and watch their division rivals head back to the NLCS once again.
