QB Rakeem Cato Leads Marshall to Victory in Military Bowl

The 2013 Military Bowl started off with a sky diver flying into the stadium, but the aerial assault did not stop there. Marshall quarterback Rakeem Cato lit up the Maryland defense for 337 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Thundering Herd to a 31-20 win over the Terrapins.

Cato  got the scoring started off with a one-yard pass to Tommy Shuler to put Marshall on top 7-0. The scoring went back and forth during the first half with Marshall holding a slim 17-13 lead at the break. Maryland took a 20-17 lead with a C.J. Brown touchdown pass to start the fourth, but than Marshall responded with a pair of touchdown drives to take the lead and ice the game.

Cato won MVP honors and with a performance like he had will likely find his name in Heisman talks next season, but like NIU's Jordan Lynch the lack of competition on Marshall's schedule will make it pretty hard for him to win.

What is really impressive about the win is the fact that the team was even in a bowl game in the first place. Head Coach Doc Holliday had seven new assistants heading into this season. To be able to integrate them seamlessly and turn a team that was 5-7 in 2012 into a 10-win team is an accomplishment in itself.
